Moonscapes Part 2

 The Indian Tunnel is a 800' long lava tube, about 30' high and 50'wide. The exit is a small opening to the surface.

Back to the surface

After we exited we still had to walk the 800' back over the lava field to reach the paved sidewalk. I sure was glad to reach pavement! 




In the afternoon we had planned to visit Boy Scout cave and Beauty Cave. According to the park brochure the Boy Scout cave retains ice year round, and you have to crawl over loose rock to enter, due to the low ceiling of the entrance. But the experience of Indian Tunnel satisfied all our desires to be underground and instead we spent an easy afternoon relaxing. Then we went to the Devil's Orchard.

    Wait a minute! You had to climb up out of that hole!

      That's right. And that's after climbing up a huge pile of lava boulders. Never again.
